Bruno Widman ( - 2018 ) | Bio
He is considered one of the masters of contemporary painting in Latin America.
He held various individual exhibitions and participated in more than fifty group shows between biennials, cultural institutions, foundations and international fairs in America and Europe.
His work is part of important collections such as: the MOLAA in Long Beach (USA), the Reyna Sofía Museum in Madrid (Spain), the Pompidou Center in Paris (France), the Museum of Modern Art in Haifa (Israel), the Museum of Visual Arts of Montevideo (Uruguay), the Legnano Museum of Modern Art in Milan (Italy), among others.
He received, among others, prizes: First Prize and Gold Medal at the XXX National Salon of Plastic Arts in Montevideo (1996), two Grand Prix in Salones de Salto, and the International Painting Prize at the VI Biennial of Sports in Fine Arts at the Palacio Velázquez in Madrid (1977).
Revealing worlds unknown to the observer, Widman is considered a pioneer in many techniques. His works have neither time nor space and allude to the world of the senses, the atmosphere he creates in each scene, feels like something that intellect would not be able to conjure: figuration, disfigurement, metamorphosis; motionless painting that guides us through multiple mazes.
With hundreds of exhibitions across the world, awards in national and international fairs; auctions at Christie's and Sotheby's since 1981, and his work at the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales in Montevideo (MNAV ), Museum Reina Sofia in Madrid, Museums in France, Buenos Aires, Haifa, and United States, he chose to work in his homeland spreading the esthetic modernization in the country.
His vast career with several "moments" portrays his long evolution. Textures and compositions are allied elements in his permanently flowing painting. His view of time, the connection between shape and color, sensation and volume matter. Rhythm and poetry stimulate endless imagination.
Bruno Widmann leaves us his transcendent work. Every day, the figures and special ambiance of his canvases continue their talk and discovery of worlds of unknown dimensions, as infinite as the observers who may value them.
"Understated humor brings light to canvases shaded in darkness" Uruguayan painter Bruno Widmann populates his works with stick figures, elevating the role of little people in the world" May 26, 2003 - David Pagel, Los Angeles Times.
